Larry Pressler criticises US for issuing travel advisories

Former US senator Larry Pressler on Wednesday criticised his own country for issuing travel advisories to its citizens saying Washington had taken an 'exaggerated view' of the tension on the Indo-Pak border and hoped that the advisories would be withdrawn soon.

The former senator, who was in Bangalore in connection with the board meeting of Infosys Technologies Limited, of which he is a member, said whenever there was a 'variety of threat' in the US in recent times, President George W Bush called upon people to go about doing business as usual.

Terming the travel advisories as 'ill-advised, unfair and unfortunate', he said, "Punishing India for what it has not done is unfair."

Stating that India and the US had a 'synergistic relationship', Pressler said, "This is something we should not be doing to one of our best allies".

The advisories, he said, would hurt business between the two countries in the long-run. "I feel totally safe in India," he said.
