Opposition fears BJP may revert to Hindutva

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

Newly appointed Bharatiya Janata Party president M Venkaiah Naidu's statement on Saturday that he would make the party 'more vibrant and accountable' by introducing a 'new work culture' is seen by political observers as an indication that the BJP is reverting to its hardline approach in view of the 2004 Lok Sabha election.

Naidu also said that he would infuse 'more team spirit' and that 'ability and mobility' would be the main criteria while choosing a new team.

His statement echoes what deputy prime minister Lal Kishenchand Advani had said during his BJP's national executive meeting at Goa last April.

BJP sources told rediff.com that the party is now contemplating the idea of giving a 'vigorous look' to the organisation and in the process is exploring the possibility of bringing in former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Rajnath Singh and former party spokesperson Maya Singh as general secretaries.

The party is also considering appointing the Minister of State for Youth and Sports Uma Bharati as Madhya Pradesh chief of the party unit and Minister of State in the PMO Vasudhara Raje Scindia as the new Rajasthan party president, the sources said.
