Ex-minister Sukh Ram convicted in telecom scam, sentenced to 3 years RI

A Delhi court on Friday convicted former communications minister Sukh Ram in a corruption case in which he was accused of causing a loss of about Rs 16.8 million (Rs 1.68 crore) to the government while awarding a contract to a private firm.Sukh Ram

The case relates to the purchase of inferior quality MARR shared radio system equipment from M/s Advanced Radio Ltd at exorbitant rates, causing a financial loss of approximately Rs 16.8 million to the Government of India.

Special judge V K Jain sentenced Sukh Ram to three years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 100,000 on finding him guilty for being part of the criminal conspiracy to defraud the exchequer.

Sukh Ram was also convicted under Section 13(2)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) and sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 100,000. The sentences would run concurrently, the judge said.

Jain also convicted Runu Ghosh, former deputy director general in the department of telecom (DoT), and P Ramarao, managing director of the Bangalore-based M/s Advanced Radio Ltd in the case.

While Ghosh was sentenced to two years imprisonment with a fine of Rs 50,000, Ramarao was sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 200,000.

All the accused were allowed time till August five to appeal against the order and were granted bail subject to their furnishing a bond of Rs 100,000 with a surety each.

The trio were present in the court along with their lawyers when the judge handed over the sentence.

In March 1997, the CBI had filed a chargesheet accusing Sukh Ram and Runu Ghosh of entering into a criminal conspiracy with Ramarao and abusing their official position as public servants.
