Bomb blast kills 35 on Algerian independence day

At least 35 people were killed and 80 wounded on Friday in a bomb attack on a market in Algeria, which is celebrating its 40th year of independence from France.

The powerful bomb tore through the market area of Larbaa, 20 kilometres from the capital Algiers, in the deadliest attack by armed extremists this year.

Two Nigerians were among the 35 people killed, officials said, adding that only nine bodies had been identified so far and that the dozens of injured had been sent to three hospitals in and around Algiers.

Larbaa area is considered to be a stronghold of the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) and the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), both believed to be affiliated to the Al Qaeda.

The GIA, along with the GSPC, have moved their armed struggle into the heart of Algiers and its suburbs after rejecting a reconciliation accord presented by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika after his 1999 election.
