Trinamool seeks PM's intervention
on bifurcation issue

The Trinamool Congress on Thursday sought Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's immediate intervention in resolving the controversy over the Railway Ministry's decision to bifurcate the Eastern Railway zone to create a new East-Central Railway with its headquarters in Hajipur in Bihar.

Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee told reporters in New Delhi before leaving for Kolkata that "the ball is in [the] prime minister's court. He has the authority to ask the railway minister to withdraw the order."

Mamata will attend a meeting of the general council of Trinamool Congress in Kolkata on July 6.

Replying to questions, Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandopadhyay said the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, the Comptroller and Auditor General, the Rakesh Mohan panel and four prominent trade unions have strongly opposed creation of a new railway zone, which would put an additional burden of Rs 7400 million on the exchequer.
