Pak opposes J&K election; welcomes Hurriyat decision to boycott

Pakistan on Thursday opposed the forthcoming election in Jammu and Kashmir terming it as a 'sham' and welcomed the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference decision to boycott it.

A statement issued by the foreign ministry said, "No election in Kashmir held under the Indian Constitution and under the barrel of guns could be a substitute for a free and fair plebiscite under UN auspices."

It said the 'ultimate decision' to take part in the polls rested with the 'people of Jammu and Kashmir and the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference'.

"The APHC has already announced its intention to boycott these sham elections," it said, adding the Pakistan government 'respects the decision of the Hurriyat leadership'.
