Ban on animal sacrifices in Bihar, Jharkhand

Bihar and Jharkhand Governor Vinod Chandra Pandey has directed the governments of the two states to ban the sacrifice of animals in temples.

Mithilesh Kumar, Principal Secretary to Pande, who also holds the additional charge of Jharkhand governor, in a letter to the chief secretaries of the two states said sacrifice of animals was punishable under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, Raj Bhavan sources said on Thursday.

Kumar, on behalf the governor, has urged the chief secretaries to find out if animal sacrifice is still going on in some temples and if so, steps be taken to stop it.

The directive came after the Vice-Chancellor of Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University, Acharya Kishore Kunal, submitted a note to the governor on animal sacrifice on Monday.

Last month a group of Hindu activists from Bihar had launched a campaign against animal sacrifice at the famous Lord Baidyanath temple at Deogarh in Jharkhand.

It is estimated that about 100 animals are slaughtered at the Deogarh temple each month. The temple management spends about Rs100,000 on procuring goats for the sacrifices.
