POTA threat political vendetta: Vaiko

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

MDMK general secretary Vaiko has dubbed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's threat to detain him under POTA for his pro-LTTE speeches as 'political vendetta'.

In a strongly-worded statement issued from the United States, where he is at present, Vaiko attributed the threat to his strident criticism of the ruling AIADMK government in recent times.

Citing one instance, Vaiko pointed to his opposition to the AIADMK government's move to get the state assembly pass a resolution that could scuttle the ongoing peace efforts in Sri Lanka.

Claiming that he had not uttered or done anything unlawful, Vaiko said, "The MDMK cannot be cowed down by such threats."

State government sources in Chennai declined to say if Vaiko would be detained on his return from the US, where he is participating in some functions organized by local Tamil organisations.

In view of recent development, the MDMK supremo said he would be returning to Chennai two days ahead of schedule, on July 10.

Meanwhile, the state police has detained at least 11 members of the Tamil National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the Tamil Nationalist Retrieval Troops (TNRT), two pro-LTTE, pan-Tamil militant groups, which were banned by the Centre under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) on Tuesday.
