Top PW leader among four killed in Andhra

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Dealing a severe blow to the ongoing talks between the People's War and the Andhra Pradesh government, the Karimnagar police on Tuesday killed four members, including a top commander, of the outlawed group.

State police spokesman Shujath Ali and Karimnagar Superintendent of Police R S Praveen Kumar said that those killed included Padmakka, PW north Telangana state zonal committee member and district committee secretary for Karimnagar West.

She was involved in a number of cases, including murders, in Karimnagar and Nizamabad districts and carried a reward of Rs 500,000 on her head.

The three others killed were district action team commander Sagar and People's Guerrilla Army members Vikram and Mamata.

The SP said that the police had received reports of large-scale extortions by the PW in Jagtial town and subdivision, especially from contractors and shopkeepers. Extortions had taken place two days ago in Nerella under Sarangapur police station limits. The police was keeping a watch and wanted to organise a gram sabha (village meeting) on Tuesday.

At 1000 hours, on Tuesday, a police party reached Nerella and the people informed them that the Naxals had forcibly collected money on Monday night and that they were camping at a hillock a kilometre away.

When the policemen went to the spot, they were showered with bullets. The Naxals were killed in retaliatory action.

The police recovered four weapons, including one AK-47, one self-loading rifle and two .303 rifles, and seven kitbags. Apparently, three other Naxals had fled the scene.
