Jana, Shatru, S S Verma to get Cabinet berths

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's Cabinet reshuffle on Monday will see 13 changes with K Jana Krishnamurthy, Balasaheb Vikhe Patil, Shatrughan Sinha and Sahib Singh Verma getting Cabinet ranks, official sources said on Monday.

They told reporters outside Vajpayee's Race Course Road residence that the names of the new ministers had been forwarded to Rashtrapati Bhavan, where they will be sworn in by President K R Narayanan at 1800 hours.

It was also confirmed that Maneka Gandhi, Dhananjay Kumar and Munni Lal would be dropped from the Council of Ministers.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's dogged insistence that she be given the railway portfolio or her party get three ministerial berths was responsible for the breakdown of talks to readmit her into the government.

BJP leaders Sanjay Paswan, Nikhil Chaudhary, Vinod Khanna and R Basangouda Patil will become ministers of state, they said.

Sripad Naik, who had resigned as minister of state ahead of the Goa elections in May, is making a re-entry. Other new faces will be Ananth Geete from the Shiv Sena and A K Murthy from the Pattali Makkal Katchi.
