RSS hoists Tricolour after 52 years

In a move indicative of its growing closeness to the political mainstream with the Bharatiya Janata Party in power, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh hoisted the national flag for the first time in 52 years at its headquarters at Mahal in Nagpur on Saturday.

The Tricolour was also unfurled at Smruti Bhawan in Reshimbagh, which houses memorials to the first two RSS chiefs, Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar and Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar aka Guruji.

In Bangalore, where the RSS is holding its biggest-ever convention in Karnataka after a 20-year hiatus, sarsanghchalak K S Sudarshan hoisted a huge national flag before a gathering of some 40,000 volunteers.

Chhotu Bhaiyya Dhakras, nagar sanghchalak (city chief) of Mohite vibhag (division) and Shriramji Joshi of the Dr Hedgewar Smarak Samiti, respectively, hoisted the flags at the headquarters and Smruti Mandir.

The RSS had earlier hoisted the Tricolour only on August 15, 1947, and January 26, 1950.
