In their first major strike this year, the National Democratic Front of Bodoland militants massacred 13 people after storming a folk theatre show at a village in Assam's Bongaigaon district on Wednesday.
About 10 heavily armed NDFB rebels stormed a pandal in remote Bishnupur village, where a night-long jatra (folk drama) was being staged, and opened indiscriminate fire, government spokesman Himangshu Shekhar Das told PTI here.
The ultras then ordered some people to stand in a line and shot them dead, Das said.
Three people were seriously injured in the firing and were admitted to the Bongaigaon civil hospital.
Security in the district, where the NDFB has a strong presence, has been beefed up with army columns taking position in vulnerable areas, Das said.
Senior civil and police officials including Inspector General of Police (law and order) Mohan Raj have rushed to the site.
