Musharraf-Benazir political deal likely: Report

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf is reported to have 'reopened high-level contacts' with the Pakistan People's Party leadership with an intent to 'break the ice and call Benazir Bhutto for her support in the near future', reports in Pakistan media said.

Quoting 'insiders' in the PPP, The Friday Times said, "Musharraf may decide to break the ice and call Bhutto for her support in the near future with the PPP prepared to accept Musharraf as president, and the military prepared to accept Bhutto as the next prime minister."

Musharraf had last week sent Pakistan's Consul General in Dubai, Amanullah Larik, to London to meet Bhutto and 'deliver Islamabad's message', the weekly said.

It quoted 'a central leader of the PPP' as saying that by sending Larik to Bhutto, Musharraf 'has conveyed an indirect message that the regime is prepared to accept her legitimate role'.

"The PPP is now also expecting the immediate release of Asif Ali Zardari, Bhutto's jailed husband, and other PPP leaders including Jehangir Badr, Yousaf Raza Gillani, Naveed Qamer and Malik Mushtaq Awan," the report said, adding that PPP sources 'seem confident of clinching a deal with the military on their own terms'.
