Ram Temple issue to dominate
UP election: RSS

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh has emphasised that the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya would be amongst the controversial issues that would dominate the assembly election in Uttar Pradesh.

This was disclosed by RSS spokesman M G Vaidya in an interview to the Aaj Tak news channel.

"When the elections are held many controversial issues would be taken up during the campaign, and the construction of the Ram temple would be one such issue," he said.

The RSS does not think that the issue concerns a particular religion, he clarified. "Both the RSS and the Bharatiya Janata Party consider the Ram Mandir issue as a national issue," he said.

According to him, 500 to 700 sadhus (saints) would begin their march to Delhi on January 20th. "This march would start from Ayodhya and end in New Delhi. On the 27th we would hold a rally in Delhi. Later, a delegation would meet Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and give him a memorandum on the construction of the Ram Mandir," Vaidya said.

When asked under what circumstances the RSS would give up the issue, Vaidya said it could be given up temporarily in the event of a war with Pakistan.
