Fernandes to undertake 7-day visit to US

Heading a high level defence delegation, Defence Minister George Fernandes will underake a seven day visit to the United States from January 15 marking a fortnight of highest level consultations between Washington and New Delhi focused on terrorism and enhancing military to military cooperation.

Fernandes, whose visit will follow close on the heels of a tour by Home Minister L K Advani, during his weeklong stay in the US is scheduled to confer with American Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, National Security Adviser Condolizza Rice and hold top level parleys at the Pentagon, according to highly placed defence sources in Delhi.

The defence minister, whose visit comes in the wake of heightening tension between Islamabad and New Delhi along the border may also meet the US Secretary of State Colin Powell. He will fly to Washington and from there proceed to New York.

Fernandes's visit to the US follows a string of visits to India by top Pentagon and state department officials, including Rumsfeld and Rice, and is likely to lead to the revival of large-scale contacts between the armed forces of the two countries.

Top defence ministry officials said Fernandes could also call on President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

He is also likely to visit some key American defence establishments.
