PM to take up minorities' issue with Khaleda Zia

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday expressed concern over reports of atrocities on the minorities in Bangladesh and said he would take up the matter with Bangladesh Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia during the SAARC summit beginning on Friday in Kathmandu.

"Reports emanating from Bangladesh pertaining to persecution of minorities are a matter of concern. The issue will be taken up with Prime Minister Khaleda Zia," Vajpayee told mediapersons in Lucknow before leaving for Kathmandu.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the steps taken so far in this regard, Vajpayee said, "They have initiated some action but they are not sufficient".

He said the issue also figured during the recent visit of Bangladesh's finance minister to New Delhi and he was apprised of India's concern over the plight of the minorities there.
