Fifteen per cent of the 927 candidates in the fray for the forthcoming assembly elections in Uttaranchal, including a former minister, have a criminal background.
Director General of Police Ashok Kant Sharan said a close watch is being kept on the conduct of these 135 candidates.
Tilak Raj Behad, former transport minister in the Bhagat Singh Koshiyari government, has 11 cases of rioting and theft against him. He is contesting from Rudrapur on a Congress ticket.
Of the 125 candidates with a criminal record, 24 have serious charges like murder and extortion against them.
Roshan alias Sudarshan Singh, who has 12 cases of murder, extortion and dacoity against him, is contesting as an independent candidate from the Dhoomakot constituency in Pauri district.
Ramesh Singh Chikwal, with over 31 cases against him, is contesting as an independent candidate from Ranikhet.
