Siege of mosque at Tarzoo
in Sopore ends

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

The 24-hour siege of a mosque at Tarzoo, Sopore in the northern Baramullah district ended Monday evening when the two militants holed-up inside surrendered before the Deputy Commissioner of Police Navin Chowdhary.

The authorities sent local villagers inside the mosque for the second time on Monday to persuade the militants, identified as Suhail Ahmad Lone and Firdaus Ahmad Bhat, to surrender.

Despite the intermittent exchange of fire between the militants and the security forces, the locals, after hectic efforts, persuaded the two to lay down their arms.

The militants handed over two AK-47 rifles to the village elders before surrendering.

Senior army and police officers, including the Baramullah district police chief, Showkat Ahmad Malik, oversaw the operation.
