Shankaracharya refuses to comment on Fernandes' visit

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal, the Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt, refused to comment on the surprise visit of Defence Minister George Fernandes to his mutt on Saturday.

"Many VIPs meet me, and I cannot divulge what we discussed," the seer told newsmen in Chennai on Sunday.

When asked whether the visit of the defence minister was related to the Ram Temple issue, he said, "The matter is in the courts, and I cannot comment on it."

However, sources told rediff.com that the hour-long meeting with Fernandes revolved around the Ayodhya dispute.

The sources added that the very fact that the Shankaracharya referred to the pending court case even to comment on the subject, should be a signal to the sangh parivar that most sants and mutt-heads from the southern states have distanced themselves from the Ram Temple issue.
