LeT behind attack on USIS office: Sources

The Lashker-e-Tayiba, along with Dubai-based gangster Aftab Ansari, was responsible for the January 22 attack on the American Center in Kolkata, official sources said on Friday.

The LeT, which considers the United States as an enemy, especially after the military campaign in Afghanistan, had taken the help of another lesser-known outfit, the Lashker-e-Mujahideen, to carry out the attack, they said.

Zahid alias Mohd Waqar, a Pakistani national who was killed in an encounter with the police in Hazaribagh in Jharkhand on Monday, had disclosed that he had initially been directed to attack the Bhawani Bhawan in Kolkata, which houses the headquarters of the criminal investigation department of the West Bengal police, the sources said.

Another accused, Mohammed Jamaluddin alias Nasir, who had provided shelter and support to the terrorists responsible for the attack, had disclosed that Zahid was later directed by Ansari to attack the American Center, they said.

Zahid, the sources said, had entered India via Kathmandu last year.
