Help promised by Centre likely to reach STF late

The help promised by the central government to the Special Task Force, in the form of sensors, surveillance gadgets and helicopters, to track down Veerappan is likely to take two to three weeks to reach the STF, a senior Ministry of Home Affairs official told rediff.com.

"The MHA is making sure that the equipment being sent to the STF is exclusively used for the purpose of tracking down the forest brigand, and not for anything else," he said.

He said the central government decided to provide help after the Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani met Karnataka Home Minister Mallikarjun Kharge on August 27 to discuss the operations of the STF following the abduction of former state minister H Nagappa by Veerappan.

He added that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's meeting with Advani on August 28 crystallised the kind of help to be given to the STF.

He said that given the 'periodic one-upmanship' between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on the issue of nabbing the forest brigand, the central government was inclined towards the two state governments submitting weekly progress reports.
