Drive launched to teach women to fight violence

Jayabala Asher, who hit the headlines four years ago for displaying exemplary bravery, is now all set to help other women combat violence.

Asher, who lost her legs during her struggle and subsequent fall from a local train while fighting a mugger, has been roped in by the SNDT Women's University to mentor a batch of students who will undergo a month's self-defence training programme.

Asher will monitor the programme, while experts in judo and taekwondo will train the students.

The university launched the self-defence programme in collaboration with the state government's sports department on August 29 at Patkar Hall, Churchgate, on the occasion of National Sports Day.

Linda Dennis, head of the department of physical education, told rediff.com, "This programme was chalked out following the recent spate of violence against women."

The pilot project aims at instilling courage, conviction, and alertness in women to face any situation.

The students of the first core group, titled 'Swayamsidha', will meet every fortnight to exchange views on the value of this programme to their lives. On graduation, this group will train future batches of girl students.
