228 file papers for 1st phase of J-K polls

Despite threats from terrorists and boycott calls from the separatists, a record number of 228 candidates have filed nomination papers for the first phase of Jammu and Kashmir assembly election in 26 constituencies on September 16, official sources said on Friday.

In the 1996 assembly election, only 142 candidates had filed their nominations for these constituencies while in 1987, there were only 116.

Eighteen candidates have filed their papers from Rajouri constituency, while in Nobra segment only one nomination was filed, according to figures available with the election office in Srinagar.

Scrutiny of papers will take place on Saturday and the last date for withdrawals of nominations is September 2.
