Naxals attack AP police stations; take hostages

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

In renewed violence, outlawed People's War Naxalites blasted two police stations and a sub-treasury office and took five policemen hostage in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday night.

Following the incidents, a red alert has been sounded all over the state.

Police officials said a group of 30 Naxalites blasted Anakapalle and Chodavaram police stations as well as a sub-treasury office at Chodavaram. They also wanted to blast the sub-jail there, but relented after the guards pleaded with them to spare the lives of the undertrials.

In the attack on the Anakapalle police station, one head constable, two constables and two home guards, who were on duty, were taken hostage.

They Naxalites also took away six musket rifles and several rounds of ammunition.
