President returns ordinance on electoral reforms

President A P J Abdul Kalam has returned to the Union Cabinet the ordinance on electoral reforms seeking clarifications on certain provisions.

The President had sought the clarifications during his meeting with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee a couple of days ago and the latter had asked the law ministry to work on it, sources said on Friday.

The answers prepared by the law ministry to the query of the President, purportedly relating to non-inclusion of information to be sought from candidates relating to their conviction in cases, will be placed before the Cabinet on Saturday.

The Cabinet had on August 16 approved the promulgation of an ordinance on electoral reforms seeking to curb criminalisation of politics.
