First phase of J&K poll to be set in motion

The process for the first phase of election to the 87-member Jammu and Kashmir assembly will be set in motion on Thursday with the issuance of a notification.

Elections to twenty-six constituencies will be held in the first of four phases on September 16.

The constituencies going to polls in the first phase are Karnah, Kupwara, Lolab, Handwara, Langate, Uri, Rafiabad, Sopore, Gurez, Bandipora, Sonawari, Sangrama, Baramulla, Gulmarg, Pattan, Nobra, Leh, Kargil, Zanskar, Nowshara, Darhal, Rajouri, Kalakote, Surankote, Mendhar, and Poonch Haveli.

The last date for filing of nominations in this phase is August 29. The scrutiny of papers will take place on August 31, withdrawal of nominations on September 2, and counting of ballots on October 10.
