R K Sharma case: Court puts off
hearing to August 26

The Delhi high court on Tuesday issued show cause notice to the police asking why the bail petition filed by Indian Police Service officer R K Sharma, prime accused in the Shivani Bhatnagar case, should not be admitted.

After hearing Dinesh Mathur, the counsel for the petitioner, Justice M K Khan directed that the matter be presented before him on August 26 for further hearing.

Members of R K Sharma's family were absent when the matter was taken up.

Mathur said that the court had not granted any relief to the petitioner and hence the Delhi police was free to arrest him.

"The court has merely issued notice to the state. No relief has been granted to my client. Our bail petition would be affected if he is arrested in the intervening period. All that we have said in our petition is that in the event of his arrest he should be released on bail," Mathur said.

The court was swarming with the police officials who were present to prevent any attempt by R K Shamra -- absconding since August 1 -- to surrender.

Three persons -- Sri Bhagwan, Pradeep Kumar and Satya Prakash -- have been arrested so far.

Bhatnagar was murdered in her Navkunj apartment in east Delhi on January 23, 1999.
