Shivani case: Mahajan rejects Madhu Sharma's charges

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan on Friday night rejected the charges levelled against him by Madhu Sharma, wife of IPS officer Ravi Kant Sharma, a prime suspect in the murder of journalist Shivani Bhatnagar.

"I totally reject the charge," Mahajan said.

He said his relationship with Shivani Bhatnagar was purely 'professional one'; that a politician has with the presspersons.

"I am also curious to find out who is behind the heinous crime," Mahajan said.

Maintaining that he had not committed any crime in his life, including trust violations, Mahajan said he was prepared for probe by any investigating agency be it the Delhi police or the Central Bureau of Investigation or by public persons or journalists.

He said he was at a loss to know why Sharma was making such an allegation against him, but added that it should be seen that the charges were being made by a person whose husband is on the run. "It is a diversionary tactic by the wife of an accused and I will leave it to the public at large to judge the issue."

He also said that his relationship with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as well as Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani was like that of a son with his father.

He said he has never seen 'as pure a person as Advani' and it was not fair to drag his name into the matter. Mahajan denied that he had spoken to Shivani on the day of her murder or for many months prior to that.
