Uttaranchal CM N D Tiwari wins Ramnagar seat

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Chief Minister of Uttaranchal, Narayan Dutt Tiwari, has won his seat from Ramnagar assembly constituency defeating his Bharatiya Janata Party rival by a margin of over 23,000 votes.

While Tiwari got 32,910 votes, his BJP rival Ram Singh Bisht could muster 9,633 votes only. All other candidates in the fray lost their deposits.

Tiwari had taken over as the chief minister of Uttranchal after the assembly poll in February this year.

Since he was not a member of the state assembly, therefore, he had to contest an election and win an assembly seat within six months, as provided in the Indian Constitution.

Tiwari was in Delhi when the counting of the votes was taken up on Monday morning. On learning about his thumping victory, Tiwari left for Dehradun.

Voting for the Ramnagar assembly constituency had taken place on August 8. Top BJP leaders in New Delhi were dismayed about the loss of the Ramnagar seat.
