Eight terrorists among 11 killed in Kashmir

Eight terrorists, including four Pakistani infiltrators, were among 11 persons killed while a counter-insurgent was injured in various incidents in the Kashmir valley since Saturday night, an official spokesman said on Sunday.

The spokesman said four Pakistani intruders were killed when trying to sneak into the valley via the Manju post near the Line of Control in the Karnah sector of the frontier Kupwara district in north Kashmir. Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain men.

In another encounter in the Nowgam sector of Budgam district early on Sunday, security forces shot dead a Pakistani activist, Kounser Islam, of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba group.

Two Pakistani terrorists identified as Harkat-ul-Mujahideen tehsil commander Abu Mudasir and Jaish-e-Mohammed activist Abu Ali were killed in an encounter with Rashtriya Rifles troops during search operations at Sonibrari-Magam near Kokernag in Anantnag district of south Kashmir on Saturday night, the spokesman said.

Two civilians, including a woman, were also killed and a house was gutted during the encounter.

Two Kalashnikov rifles, four magazines, 60 rounds and a hand grenade were recovered from the slain terrorists.

Troops also killed a Lashkar-e-Tayiba terrorist hailing from Faisalabad, Pakistan, in an encounter at Arwani near Zainapora in Shopian area of Pulwama district in south Kashmir on Sunday. A house was damaged in this encounter as well. A Kalashnikov rifle, a wireless set, two grenades and some ammunition were recovered from the terrorist.

Police recovered an unidentified corpse from Duchinar in Kupwara district on Sunday, the spokesman said.

He said terrorists shot at and critically wounded a counter-insurgent associated with the Ikhwan at the Arin bus stand in Bandipora area of Baramulla district on Saturday night as he was going home to Dardpora.

The spokesman said encounters between terrorists and security personnel also took place at Nowgam in Baramulla and Magam in Budgam districts on Sunday. But details were not available as both areas were under a tight security cordon.
