Vaiko to go to Delhi for vice-presidential poll

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

The Madras high court on Friday granted permission to Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko, detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, to fly to Delhi to vote in the vice-presidential election on Monday, August 12.

Justice V Kanakaraj allowed the petition filed by Vaiko after the state government did not raise any objection to it.

He, however, directed Vaiko not to speak to the media at any stage of his daylong visit.

The judge had earlier allowed Vaiko, a member of the Lok Sabha, to vote in the presidential election last month.

But at that time Vaiko did not have to fly to Delhi to cast his vote. With elected members of the state assembly forming part of the electoral college for the presidential poll, Vaiko, who is housed in the Vellore Central Prison, was driven down to Chennai for the purpose.

But in the vice-presidential election, only elected members of both Houses of Parliament form the electorate. Hence Vaiko will need to be present in Delhi to cast his vote.
