The monsoon session of Parliament may be adjourned sine die on Monday as the government's plans to get the supplementary demands for general and railway grants passed amidst the din on Friday.
This was the impression opposition members gathered from Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan at the weekly meeting of the Business Advisory Committee at the latter's office in Parliament House on Thursday.
The other listed business on the government agenda is the bill pertaining to the salary and allowances of the leader of the opposition and the Representation of the Peoples (Amendment) Bill, popularly called the electoral reforms bill.
If the latter bill, to nullify the Election Commission's notification of June 28 based on the Supreme Court judgment of May 2, cannot be passed, the government plans to promulgate an ordinance to prevent returning officers from being able to disqualify candidates who fail to make full disclosures of their past, their assets and liabilites, and their educational qualifications.
Opposition members returning from the BAC meeting said the government was adamant on not accepting any of their demands, including for legislation to back the cancellation of allotment of petrol pumps and an inquiry into the controversy by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court.
The government, they said, gave clear indications that it would prefer the session to be closed on Monday, once the vice-presidential election is completed. The session was otherwise due to end on August 14.
