Musharraf not to withdraw proposed amendments: Report

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has decided against withdrawing the proposed constitutional amendments empowering him to dismiss the prime minister and create the National Security Council, the Pakistani daily Dawn reported on Wednesday.

He, however, promised to consider the criticism against the proposals, the report added.

He took this decision at a joint meeting of his Cabinet and the NSC on Tuesday, it said.

The meeting reviewed feedback from the public on the proposed amendments, the paper reported.

According to the proposed amendments, the 10-member NSC would consist of the President, top brass of the military, the prime minister and governors of the provinces, the paper said.

Musharraf, according to the report, did not reject the idea of including the interior, defence and foreign affairs ministers in the NSC.

Political parties and the media in Pakistan have termed the proposed amendments as an attempt by the army to take over the government permanently, the paper said.

The government, on its part, has defended the NSC as a consultative body, which would prevent any future military coups in the country, it said.

Musharraf told the meeting he will ensure that the political and economic reforms agenda followed in last two-and-a-half years will not be undone by future governments, it said.
