Woman immolates herself on husband's pyre

A 65-year-old woman sat on the funeral pyre of her husband on Tuesday and died of burns at a village in Madhya Pradesh's Panna district.

Police in Bhopal said Mallu Nai died early on Tuesday at Tamoli Patna village, about 70km from the district headquarters of Panna, after a prolonged sickness.

On learning that Mallu's wife Kuttubai was going to commit sati, two policemen from Saleha, 8km from the village, rushed to the site and tried to save her. But angry villagers attacked them with stones.

Kuttubai's two grown-up sons did not try to prevent her from sitting on their father's funeral pyre, the police said.

The village is now deserted and further information about the incident will be known only after the residents return, police said.

A group of senior police officers has rushed to Tamoli Patna.
