EC team briefs commission on situation in Gujarat

The Election Commission team, which visited Gujarat for an on-the-spot assessment, on Monday briefed the commission on the situation in the riot-torn state.

Sources said the team would take another three to four days to submit its report to Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh and the two other Election Commissioners T S Krishnamurthy and B B Tandon.

The nine-member team led by Deputy Election Commissioner A N Jha and S Mendiratta, returned to Delhi on Sunday after a five-day visit in which they toured several districts in the state and interacted with the leaders of political parties, senior government officials, NGOs and others.

The team also spoke to people in relief camps to ascertain the conditions they were living in, losses suffered by them, compensation and other issues.

The team was despatched to Gujarat on July 30 to review the existing situation and preparedness of the state machinery for the conduct of free and fair assembly polls.
