Militants attack Congress
office in Srinagar

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Militants on Friday afternoon attacked the heavily guarded office of the Congress on Residency Road in Srinagar.

Witnesses said a hand grenade was lobbed into the building. The grenade, however, exploded without causing any damage.

Police said nearly 30 Congress workers were inside the building when the attack took place. It is not yet known if the state Congress chief Ghulam Nabi Azad was there too.

The attack took place just when Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh was announcing the schedule for the forthcoming assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir at a press conference in New Delhi.
