UK report censures Gujarat chief minister

In a damning internal report, British officials in India have said the recent violence in Gujarat was "pre-planned" and "carried out" with the support of the state government.

According to BBC, which has obtained a copy of the report, British officials claimed the violence had all the "hallmarks of ethnic cleansing" and "reconciliation between Hindus and Muslims is impossible while Chief Minister Narendra Modi remains in power."

The report said the riots "far from being spontaneous, were planned possibly months in advance and were carried out by an extremist Hindu organisation with the support of the state government."

It said: "The aim was to purge Muslims from Hindu areas and at least 2,000 people have died in the violence."
