AIADMK to abstain from voting on Gujarat censure motion

The AIADMK "will not vote for or against the motion," Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa told reporters in Chennai on Friday.

Asked whether this meant the she was moving closer to the BJP, she said her party would maintain equidistance from both the BJP and the Congress-led fronts.

"Ours is an independent party and we will take independent decision on issues," she said.

She said it was a matter of concern to all that till date the violence in Gujarat continued unabated and added that the Centre should take firm steps to put a stop to the violence.

She refused to comment of the BJP's refusal to accept Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's resignation. "It is an internal matter of another party," she said.

"I will not demand the resignation of another chief minister. It is wrong to make such a demand. But if he (Modi) had voluntarily resigned on moral grounds, that is a different thing," she said.
