Vigilance officials question PPSC ex-secretary

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau on Thursday questioned the former secretary of the Punjab Public Service Commission, Prithipal Singh, in connection with the job-fixing scam involving PPSC chairman Ravinder Pal Singh Sidhu.

Prithipal Singh was summoned to detail out the functioning and selection process of the commission, Superintendent of Police (Vigilance) Jaskaran Singh said, adding that he was not an accused in the case.

When questioned about the burning of some records by him recently at Patiala, the former secretary told the officials that it was done as per the rules of the commission.

PPSC sources said Prithipal Singh had allegedly burnt some records pertaining to selections made in 1998 on Sidhu's directions.

Jaskaran Singh said raids were on to nab a Ludhiana-based Markfed officer, Randhir Singh Gill alias Dhira, owner of a patrol pump at Moga, Prem Sagar, Panchkula-based veterinarian Shamshir Singh and an alleged hawala operator, G S Manchanda.

Manchanda had allegedly transferred Sidhu's ill-gotten wealth to foreign countries while the other three were touts of the chairman.

Besides Sidhu, three other persons -- Jagman Singh, Paramjit Singh Pammi and Surinder Kaur Manchanda, wife of the alleged hawala operator -- have been arrested.
