Six killed in fresh violence in Ahmedabad

At least six persons were killed on Tuesday in police firing as fresh violence swept through Shahpur and Behrampur areas of Ahmedabad for the second successive day, taking the toll in two days of rioting in the city to 27.

Board exams for Class X and XII were, however, held peacefully. Turnout of Muslim students was high.

A 30-year-old woman was among those killed in the latest round of violence. Over a dozen houses and shops were set on fire in Khanpur and Nagoriward localities in Shahpur police station area prompting authorities to impose indefinite curfew from 2 pm.

Two persons were stabbed to death and police opened fire to quell a rioting mob in Gheekanta locality of Mirzapur.

Police fired several rounds and teargas shells to contain violence in Shahpur area where trouble erupted after the death of a youth in police firing.

Over 150 people have been injured in violence in Gujarat since Sunday.

Army has been deployed in all sensitive areas of the walled city. Two more companies of Rapid Action Force and Central Industrial Security Force have been rushed to Ahmedabad.

Indefinite curfew remained in force in Gomtipur, Bapunagar and Rakhial areas of the city which were rocked by violence on Sunday.
