Jayalalithaa wants Modi to quit

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Joining the chorus against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday favoured replacement of the Gujarat chief minister and opposed early polls in the state.

"I do not think there is any need for advancing the assembly elections there. What is needed is a change of government. It is up to the BJP and the Centre to take necessary steps in Gujarat in the overall national interest," she told reporters in an informal chat after the assembly rose for the day.

Jayalalithaa said, "Peace has not returned to Gujarat."

Referring to the 'sack Modi campaign' rocking Parliament, the Tamil Nadu chief minister said. "It is therefore in national interest, the Centre should find an immediate and amicable solution."

However, Jayalalithaa was cautious not to comment on a possible threat to the NDA government at the Centre, in view of the TDP's stand on the 'Modi issue'. Nor would she comment on a possible realignment of political forces at the national-level, in the light of Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav, reportedly joining forces with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

"Such situations have not arisen now, to comment upon. I cannot answer hypothetical questions," she said.
