Trinamool to back NDA in case of confidence vote

The Trinamool Congress said on Tuesday that it would support the Vajpayee government in the event of a confidence vote in the Lok Sabha on the demand for the ouster of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

"In the event of a confidence vote in the House, we will support the Vajpayee government. People don't want an election every year. Opposition parties earlier brought down the Vajpayee government, but failed to provide an alternative," Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee said in Kolkata.

"We have seen three governments coming and going in the past few years. This time also they want to bring down the Vajpayee government," she said.

Reiterating the demand for Modi's removal, she said what had happened in Gujarat was a "blot".

The Trinamool chief also said that assembly polls should be held in Gujarat only after peace returned to the state.

She, however, said providing support to the Vajpayee government did not mean that "we will take everything lying down. Our party was most vocal against the Union Budget. Our ideology is also different from that of the BJP. We want the Vajpayee government to strictly adhere to the NDA agenda."
