Naidu vows to press for Modi's removal

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Telugu Desam Party chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said on Monday that he would continue to press for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's removal.

Addressing a press conference in Hyderabad, Naidu said that the communal violence in Gujarat was a national issue.

Virtually rejecting the Bharatiya Janata Party's contention that the Gujarat issue was an internal matter of the party, Naidu said: "We have taken a principled stand on the issue. Right from day one, when the riots broke out, we have been asking them [the BJP government in Gujarat] to control the situation, maintain law and order and protect the life and property of all citizens. But the violence has continued unabated for weeks."

"We have told them to impartially deal with the situation, take up rehabilitation of victims and provide them uniform assistance," he said.

"We told them to apply the healing touch and undertake confidence-building measures."

Naidu said: "In the backdrop of the failure of the Gujarat government, we demand a change of leadership to bring normalcy. Otherwise, we feel the situation will deteriorate and have nationwide repercussions. We also feel that it is not the proper time for conducting assembly elections in that state at this critical juncture."

When asked how long he would wait for the BJP to fulfil his demands, he said: "We are reviewing the Gujarat developments from time to time. We are going about the issue step-by-step."

Asked if his party had discussed the option of withdrawing support to the National Democratic Alliance government, he said: "We are discussing all options. You (the media) want us to go to the logical conclusion. But we want a solution to the problem. We cannot go for logical conclusion now itself."
