BJP stand on Modi puts TDP in a dilemma

After its demand for removal of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was bluntly rejected by the BJP leadership, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), a key ally of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, is weighing various options on how to respond to the emerging situation.

The BJP national executive's decision to ask Modi to dissolve the Gujarat assembly and seek a fresh mandate has not found favour with the TDP.

This decision has compounded the TDP's dilemma and aggravated its discomfort.

"We have taken note of their (BJP's) decisions. We will discuss them in the party forum and respond," TDP supremo and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu told reporters in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Caught between the political compulsion of keeping his main adversary the Congress at bay and the growing sense of discomfort within the TDP over its continued alliance with the BJP, Naidu will continue 'informal consultations' with his senior colleagues during the day to take stock of the political situation.

A top TDP functionary maintained that the party was 'pinning its hopes' on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and was awaiting 'positive decisions from him'.

'We prefer to wait and watch. We want to see the final outcome (of the BJP's meeting)', party sources said.
