I had decided to seek fresh mandate five days ago: Modi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Friday night said that he had made up his mind to resign and seek fresh mandate five days ago.

He said that if his resignation could in any way help the situation in the state, he was prepared to do so.

He was gratified that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and others fully supported him, Modi said.

He also had decided that he would resign because he did not want to appear to be responsible for any bad name Gujarat could get internationally, Modi added.

He, however, avoided a reply to a question whether the resignation and rejection were all stage-managed.
