Five ultras killed in Manipur

Five underground members were killed in an encounter with the Assam Rifles at Kamba Chingjin in Manipur's Imphal east district on Thursday, official sources said.

The encounter took place when paramilitary forces, acting on a tip-off, rushed to the area under the Lamlai police station and surrounded it, they said.

One carbine, two pistols, one rifle and a large number of ammunition were recovered from them, the sources said.

The identity of the extremists was yet to be ascertained.

On April 9, six people -- four Central Reserve Police Force personnel and two civilians -- were killed in an exchange of fire in Pangei area.
