Weed out militants from higher reaches: Farooq

Mukhtar Ahmed in Srinagar

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday sought immediate operations in the hilly areas of Jammu region to weed out terrorists hiding in the upper reaches of Udhampur district.

Militants fired at the helicopter of Abdullah, when he was on his way to Dandli village in Udhampur, where militants had gunned down seven villagers on Monday.

"Militants fired indiscriminately from higher reaches as the chief minister's chopper was landing near the periphery of Dandli Arnas," a spokesman of the Jammu and Kashmir government said.

"I will take up with the Union home minister (Lal Kishenchand Advani) the issue regarding deployment of additional security forces for eliminating the militants. If necessary, army assistance would also be sought for such operations," he said.

"Armed action has become necessary against militants to instill confidence among the locals," he added.
