8 persons killed in Kashmir

Four militants, two Border Security Force personnel and an activist of the ruling National Conference were among eight persons killed while eight others, including five security force personnel, were injured in separate incidents in the Kashmir valley since Tuesday night, official sources said.

Extremists shot dead National Conference activist Ghulam Ahmad Sheikh at Bulbul-Lanker area of downtown Srinagar on Tuesday night, the sources said. Sheikh, a former block secretary of the party, is the second party worker to be killed in the city within a week.

An Ikhwani (renegade militant, so called because many of them joined the counter-militant organisation Ikhwan-ul-Mujahideen), Sameer Ahmad Ganai, was killed when militants attacked counter-insurgents at Dooru in Anantnag district of south Kashmir on Wednesday, the sources said. Two students and another Ikhwani were injured in the shooting.

Meanwhile, a fierce encounter between terrorists and BSF personnel left three terrorists and a BSF trooper dead and five BSF personnel injured at Kharampora village in Pulwama district on Tuesday night.

The encounter took place when the BSF raided a terrorist hideout following information about the presence of terrorists in the village, the sources said. The militants hiding there began firing and lobbed grenades in a vain attempt to escape.

The encounter continued for several hours and ended in the killing of three terrorists identified as Abu Umer and Abu Bakr, both Pakistanis associated with the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, and a local militant Mohammad Yousuf.

A BSF trooper also lost his life and five other personnel were injured in the encounter.

A Hizbul Mujahideen militant and a BSF jawan were killed when BSF personnel laid a cordon around Karimabad village in Pulwama district on Tuesday to flush out terrorists hiding there.

While one extremist escaped from the village, another took shelter in the house of the village numberda and opened fire on the security personnel, killing a jawan, S Kandu. The BSF returned the fire. After an exchange lasting several hours, the terrorist, identified later as Abdul Rashid Dar of Chewa village, was killed.

A Kalashnikov rifle and three magazines were recovered from the debris of the house along with the body of the slain militant.

In a separate incident, ultras intruded into the house of a former Ikhwan activist, Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, at Shanu-Mawar in Handwara area of Kupwara on Tuesday night and tried to abduct him. But the inmates of the house foiled their attempt by raising a hue and cry forcing the militants to escape.

The sources said unidentified gunmen also intruded into a house at Dani Mazar area of downtown Srinagar in the night and decamped with cash, a colour television and some gold ornaments.
