Links between J&K, northeast militants: Govt

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

The Union home ministry has admitted a nexus between Jammu and Kashmir terrorists and militants operating in the northeast, but failed to confirm links between Naxalites in various states and the J&K and northeast terrorists.

"There have been reports to indicate nexus between terrorists active in J&K and in the northeast for effective and coordinated actions," a home ministry source told rediff.com.

"The government is also aware of the attempts being made by various terrorist outfits in the country to forge links with each other," the source added.

The source said that hawala operators worked as conduit for these terrorist outfits.

"Terrorist outfits operating in J&K and elsewhere in the country have been dependent on Pakistan and other sympathetic countries and some patrons for financial assistance, which is passed on through hawala operators," the source said.

Maintaining that 'public order' and 'police' were state subjects, the home ministry source said that it is for the concerned state governments to devise various methods to counter terrorist activities.

"The government has adopted a coordinated and multi-pronged approach for tackling the activities of militants, which includes strengthening border management to check infiltration, gearing up of the intelligence machinery, close interaction between different agencies of the Centre and state governments and modernisation and upgradation of police equipment," the source said.
