Mamata demands Narendra Modi's removal

The Trinamool Congress, a constituent of the ruling National Democratic Alliance, on Monday demanded the removal of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi saying the "people have lost confidence in him."

Party chief Mamata Banerjee told newsmen in Kolkata that Modi should step down.

"If BJP so desires, the party could bring in a new in his place," she said.

The Trinamool chief had urged Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Sunday to take immediate steps to contain violence in Gujarat.

The Trinamool Congress, she said, had already submitted a detailed report to the Centre outlining the failure of the Narendra Modi government in curbing violence in Gujarat.
